CAT01. The begining

In 2007 the ETSEIB Motorsport team history started. That was the name decided by the 13 team members who formed the very first team crew. Although they started a few months earlier, time was still very limited.

In order to be officially recognized by the school, three teachers were assigned as project coordinators.

This way students were able to design a fully new car which was presented as CAT01. The aim of the project was to take it to competitions held in Silverstone (UK) and Hockenheim (Germany).

In UK, it ended at position 53/72, while in Germany it finished at position 52/78. These results might seem poor at first sight, but very positive considering that it was the team first year and that the team completed the dynamic events, becoming the first Spanish team to do so.

CAT02. Learning from errors

The second model was carried out during 2008/09 and was named CAT02. Again it started almost from scratch, although it could take a few pieces from his predecessor, CAT01. The team grew up to 16 members with a majority of new members.

CAT02 presented major developments in terms of chassis design. It counted on a self-supporting structure constructed of honeycomb aluminum plates (hexagonal array). A change in terms of streamlined design was also made. Weight was reduced by using lighter materials, as in the case of suspension trapezes, which were made with carbon fiber instead of steel. After all these improvements, the CAT02 weighted 250kg.

Regarding competition, the team achieved the goal of participating in three competitions, improving static events results and completing the dynamic events. Unfortunately, it failed to meet the goals due to lack of time. The vehicle was not ready on time for the first race (Silverstone), nor for the dynamic tests of Italy and Germany, where the team was 23/39 and 62/78 respectively. However the team got great results in some static events, such as achieving 2nd place in Style Award in Germany and 3rd prize in Cost Analysis in Italy.

CAT03. Knowledge transference

During the 2009/10 season the third car was created, the CAT03. The team was formed by 25 members and the car was new again. This time, half of the team were second years, which eased the transference of knowledge, essential for this kind of project.

Reducing weight remained as the main goal. Even though, the car had a final weight similar to the previous model. One of the reasons was the seek of increasing the rigidity of the chassis with steel pipes. The main improvement over the CAT02 was the suspension system. It was decided to use the same technology, despite there had been problems in the use of adhesives on tubing hangers. After several tests they were able to eliminate the problems of previous years.

In 2010 the team attended three competitions, with the addition of Argentina to the FS competition calendar. Thus, the CAT03 went to Germany, Italy and Spain. Results improved in comparison with previous seasons, especially in Italy where a 12th position was achieved.

CAT04. The evolution

In 2011, during the team’s fourth season, CAT04 was born. 25 students were involved in the design and construction of the car. This was the last model with combustion powertrain, giving way to following electric models.

CAT04 was meant to improve the reliability and performance of the car. For the first time, the strategy was to make a direct evolution of the previous model, without changing significantly the chassis design. They focused their efforts on solving the parts that caused the biggest amount of problems in CAT03. Even though the CAT04 was an evolution of CAT03, the amount of pieces made by the team members was greater than ever, in order to reduce weight by 20kg.

That season the team participated in three competitions. The team participated in Austria for the first time, where they showed their class getting a 19th place and winning a static test, the Cost Analysis. But the he good results where only an advance of what was about to come. In germany they got the best results in the history of the team, reaching the 21th position. Finally, in FS Spain satisfactory results were also obtained. Undoubtedly, the CAT04 had surpassed all his predecessors.

CAT05e. Electric future

Year 2011 was a very important turning point in the history of the team. It was chosen to leave behind combustion models and enter in the electric vehicles world. Following the nomenclature of previous models, the new car was called CAT05e, adding an ‘e’ for electric.

The objectives of the 2011/12 season were very clear: to design, build and have ready to compete an electric car. That was a challenge for the 25 students who were part of the team and who had to start over again with an electric model. With the change of combustion to electric it was intended to reduce vehicle weight in 20kg. The drive system was comprised of two independent motors to ensure good traction and stability.

That year the team took part again in three competitions. At first, in Germany, the car had some problems due to the insuficient testing time, but noted with a creditable 2nd place in Cost Analysis. It was not until Spain that the team got good results, where they got 11th place. Finally, in Italy, 9th place was achieved and performed very well in acceleration test doing 4,4s.

CAT06e. Improve performance

CAT06e, the second electric model was developed during 2012/13 season. After being introduced to the Formula Student Electric and the experience of the previous year, 35 students were involved in the new prototype.

Once again, the goal was to improve and refine the previous model, improving reliability and performance. One of the highlights was that the CAT06e was the first model that incorporated aerodynamic devices. However, the team focused on systems and aspects which caused more problems in recent competitions. The other parts were also redesigned and optimized. Many car parts were manufactured in-house, including the 2nd carbon fiber monocoque and some own designed inverters.

As in previous years, ETSEIB Motorsport took part in Germany, Spain and Italy competitions. At Hockenheim (Germany) 24th position was achieved winning the Gold in Cost Analysis. In the second Spain, the team won the gold in Efficiency and bronze in Cost Analysis. The season ended with a 16th position in Italy. However, the CAT06e was, so far, the model with more podiums.

CAT07e. Pursuing success

The team had been participating in the Formula Student championship for 6 years, 4 of them with combustion cars obtaining very satisfying results.

Two years it was taken a step forward towards the automotive future, adapting the car to an environmentally friendly energy use, so we created our first electrical car, the CAT05e.
We have already gotten through over the most difficult stages and we have reached all the objectives.

At the end of the season, the team got really good results. With a 3rd position in FS Czech Republic, it was the first time the team got to the stages of the general podium in a FSAE competition. After that, the team got 24th in Germany and 16th in Spain.

CAT08e. A big change

The CAT08e has become the best electric car of the state in Formula Student Spain 2015, supported by an excellent 3rd place in the Business Plan static event. This car is the best electric car ever built in ETSEIB Motorsport team and represents a major step forward in the stages of design, manufacturing and set up.

In the 8th year of participation in Formula Student competition, the team was the first within the state to build a fully carbon fibre monocoque. Thanks to this breakthrough, the weight of the car has been significantly reduced while maintaining optimum mechanical properties.

Reducing the size of the wheels, along with the addition of a high-performance powertrain and an improvement on all components, have made CAT08e the most efficient and powerful car ETSEIB Motorsport Barcelona has ever made.

The new engine and inverter are able to deliver an output up to 100 kW (135 CV), powered by the new battery box, which allows the car to achieve the maximum performance. In addition, the aerodynamic package has increased the downforce of the car to optimize adherence to the ground and its performance when turning in curves.

CAT09e. On the top

With all the experience gained with CAT08e, the CAT09e was born with the intention to bring its predecessor to the limit.

Designed as an evolution of the CAT08e, the CAT09e has been the best car that the team ETSEIB Motorsport has made. I has led the team to its best results by wining for the first time an overall electric competition, the Formula Student Czech Republic.

With a great basis, the design and building of the CAT09e were performed and finished much earlier than the previous years what allowed to perform more than 450km of testing. Thanks to it, we manage to obtain a great set up in the car and push it to its limits.

The optimized combination of the set up with a refined powertrain and electronics led to a very satisfactory results and make the team crave for even better results

CAT10e. Even higher

After the victory in FS Czech Republic,improving the level stablished by CAT09e was a great challenge.But, as every year, the team faced the season with desire to overcome.

To do this, we trusted in a concept similar to its predecesor incorporating a serie os innovations to improve its performance. First, the aerodynamic package was redesigned to increase the downforce, apart from optimally directing the into the chassis inlets to improve the cooling system of the batteries. It was made a new integral monocoque of carbón fiber more rigid, key factor to ensure a good behave of the vehicle in curve. The direction was also made new and allowed the car to reduce the efforts that the pilot should exercise. Other improvements came from the electrical part. An optimized motor-inverter configuration allowed a increase in the efficiency of the tractor set as well as to obtain a better performance of the maximum 80kW of power limited by the regulations of the competition. On the other hand, a BMS (Battery Management System) was developed, which increased the reliability and gave the team great flexibility in adapting the system to the car. Finally, all these improvements were accompanied by a significant reduction in weight.

Many innovations that made us think that the CAT10e would play a very good role in competitions…And that’s how it was! After two months of testing, it was possible to finish in a top 10 on the most important competitions of the Formula Student (9th place in Austria, 7th place in Germany and 9th place in Spain) and many prizes in the static events (1st place Cost Report in Austria and Germany and 2nd place in Catalonia, 3rd place in the Business Plan in this competition). Also worth mentioning the special prize in the German competition for the best prepared car for the technical inspection (scrutineering) and the prize for the best Spanish team.

These historical results have made the CAT10e the best car made by ETSEIB Motorsport.

CAT11e. Passion for technology

Regarding the CAT10e, the team has redesigned the car with the aim of making it faster and lighter.

Reduction of 16 Kg of weight, in part due to the 5 Kg of the monocoque reduction through a better use of carbon fiber and implemented topological optimizations, while maintaining the geometry of the previous year. An electronic unit of improved and highly reliable power allowed to have a safe and competitive vehicle in the world of Formula Student. With regard to the dynamics of the car, we have managed to find specific suspension, fall and convergence configurations for each dynamic test that have made possible an improvement in the behavior of the car on the track.

In addition, it has been redesigned the entire aerodynamic package that incorporates a new rear spoiler with monkey seat, a new design of a spoiler that allows improving the efficiency of the new flat plane, which includes side channels and a rear wing of the elements with DRS.

CAT12e. Optimized past

The CAT12e is the twelfth electric car designed and manufactured by ETSEIB Motorsport, and supposes a revolution: it has gone from a vehicle with a single engine and rear-wheel drive to a vehicle with an engine on each wheel and independent control with torque vectoring technology. The new vehicle is lighter and faster, thanks to an optimized use of carbon fiber in the manufacture of the monocoque and the new and sophisticated aerodynamics. In addition, the cooling system, ergonomics and telemetry have been improved, the suspension has been redesigned, and a two-stage planetary transmission adapted to the 4 engines of each wheel has been designed and manufactured.
